Challenge

Three projects in one—working with Tourism Northern Ontario (TNO) meant designing and building three websites: one for the Northern Ontario Tourism Summit, one for TNO itself, and one for Tourism Excellence North.

Each entity already had a website but TNO’s Request For Proposal called for more robust, design-driven solutions.

Solution

After a search for the right partner, TNO chose Cavera Inc. to design and develop three unique, but connected websites from the ground up. We worked with each project’s stakeholders to build sites that would be engaging and useful to all website visitors. The project included:

  • Northern Ontario Tourism Summit’s website was event-focused, providing important registration and event information.
  • Tourism Northern Ontario’s website — a hub for industry professionals to find relevant information and learn about TNO.
  • The Tourism Excellence North (TEN) website allowed tourism operators, communities/destinations, and other TEN stakeholders to access tourism development training resources online.

Results

We designed and built three websites, each very different.

We made sure that each was accessible to WCAG 2.0 Level AA standards, had multilingual capabilities, was mobile-responsive, printable, and user friendly.

All three went through an extensive design process that started with content mapping to determine the ideal structure for each site. We engaged stakeholders to find out which information is most important to users. Next, we created design concept mockups to collect feedback and decide on a style direction.

Each website made use of component-based design with the purpose of building websites that scale while retaining brand consistency.

Northern Ontario Tourism Summit

The Northern Ontario Tourism Summit website creates a sense of excitement about the upcoming event. The website is designed to lead the user through the important details of the event and, once the user is ready, give them the chance to register online. The copy is friendly and upbeat and the photography is hand-picked to capture the essence of Northern Ontario.

The website is tightly integrated into WordPress as a content management system, meaning that it can be easily updated from year to year.

In the off-season, the website has the ability to simplify into a “coming soon” layout, putting focus on the countdown. When the event draws near, it fills with information. The schedule system includes a custom-built integration that syncs with a third-party event management app to prevent content duplication.

Tourism Northern Ontario

The website for Tourism Northern Ontario was designed to be informational and resource-based. The majority of TNO's audience are tourism operators (businesses in the tourism industry). As such, the website acts as a hub for information.

The site aims to clearly describe what TNO does and how its involvement helps guide Northern Ontario’s tourism industry in a unified direction.

In addition to providing information about TNO and its services, the website features a searchable/filterable resource directory, a protected staff-only portal, and a dynamic event calendar.

Tourism Excellence North

In terms of visuals, Tourism Excellence North’s website is the most straightforward, designed to be simple and intuitive when browsing.

The website is built on top of WordPress, using a Learning Management System (LMS) where users can enroll to access learning tools and track their progress.

Enrolled users can apply to attend and pay for in-person training workshops. In addition, privileged users (Brokers and TEN Specialists) are able to download curriculum, marketing resources, and other relevant documents.

Developing an e-learning platform was a new frontier for both our team and the client. This project was therefore iterative to accommodate for content as it became available, rather than a hard launch.
